I define interior design as the creative solution and organization of space and objects that is in harmony with the humanistic need, the surrounding environment, and with nature.

I’m not as tuned into the interior design community as I should so my opinion may have little impact.  The professional aspect of interior design and architecture should be monitored. The US has chosen to monitor parts of these fields through licensing. I do feel that there should be more distinctions between licensed and unlicensed designers. I am not saying that they should not be able to practice, however they should have more restrictions in residency aspects of the practice. The criteria for licensing are to aid in regulating the industry and keeping the public safe.

  1. I agree with your definition of interior design. I feel it encompasses all aspects that we work to achieve. I also completely agree with the idea of monitoring licensing and creating a bigger divide between the licensed and non-licensed designers. We are responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of the public and we can not have that jeopardized. It is hard enough already to have so many people misconstrue what we are and what we do, but now we must work even harder to prove to them that there is such a huge difference.

  2. Hi there!

In your definition of interior design I appeciate your usage of the word 'harmony.' We place walls, levels, furniture and ceiling planes in places for a reason. It should never be- because it looks pretty. Form follows function. What separates decorators from designers, is that designers have the knowledge and capability to harmonize these spaces and objects in the ways that you described.

  3. Design is... "In harmony with the humanistic need, the surrounding environment, and with nature."

I agree with your definition of interior design. Its speaks volumes and shows that you work with the earth in mind. Sustainablility is a huge aspect of our profession and I think it's important to include that in our definitions.

I do disagee with your statement:

"I’m not as tuned into the interior design community as I should so my opinion may have little impact."

Any opinion is an opinion worth considering. Get tuned in! As soon as we started this discussion I got fired up and was motivated to read. You know what you're talking about and I agree with your views. Regulations need to be placed, and tests need to be taken!

  5. Creative is a huge part of Interior Design! I don't think that any of us would be capable of designing a space without creativity!

I like how you used that as a main descriptive term of Interior Design.
